"We feel it is critical that a new Sainsbury's comes to Ledbury, as it will bring many new benefits and more importantly encourage more of us to stay in Ledbury to do our big shops! There are over 400 members of our LE.S.S (LEdbury Supports Sainsbury's) Facebook group, that feel as the majority campaign group in the town, it is important we speak out!"
(Colin Marschall, LE.S.S spokesperson)
Sainsbury’s is proposing to redevelop the site currently occupied by GBR Industries Ltd (Galebreaker) on New Mills Industrial Estate, with Galebreaker looking to expand into attractive and larger new premises in Ledbury.
The proposed redevelopment will bring a new foodstore offering more choice and would create up to 220 new full and part-time jobs for local people. The plans also include a new, competitively-priced petrol station.
Galebreaker Relocation
Galebreaker started 27 years ago as a small Herefordshire-based family business and has undergone rapid growth in recent years to become the UK leader in several markets. Currently based at New Mills Industrial Estate, Galebreaker is looking to accelerate its expansion plans by building new purpose-built, flagship premises in Ledbury with all staff being retained and relocated. Galebreaker is hoping to get the support so they can reach their target of 50% growth over the next 5 years, which will bring new jobs.
Why are we here?
Because as local residents we feel that the current supermarket has simply been outgrown by what is recognised as the only growing community and town within the county of Herefordshire, the population within the town has doubled over the last 2 decades and the population within the HR8 postal code area now stands at some 14,000+.
Ledbury is home to 1 of the top 4 employers of migrant workers within Herefordshire and their involvement within the area adds almost another 1000 to the community each springtime. And then there is of course the recent announcement of some 800 new homes which are to be developed and built within Ledbury, again adding over the next 2 decades a further 3000+ to the ever bulging population, not only will they need to be fed but there will be a need for employment and what better opportunity for Ledbury to be seen, in todays economic climate, as a leader in inviting a blue ribbon company into its neighbourhood that provides some 220 full and part time jobs for local people.
Finally there is the privilege that many communities enjoy with urban areas and that is a choice of supermarket that offers choice, affordability and convenience and let's not forget the promise of a much needed fuel station.

Im a local single Mum, who has a low budget to contend with. I find that the local shops do not cater enough for those on low budgets, the choice I have is not as good as some of the larger stores that I am having to use to get the quantity of goods I need for the least amount of money. Deborah Baker, Ledbury .
More choice, well stocked shelves, not having to drive into Hereford or Malvern, able to buy things not currently available in Ledbury, ie childrens socks and pants, and other items of clothing that are cheaper than charity shops. Claire Ellis. Ledbury.
I believe a larger store is exactly whats required in Ledbury to meet the needs of it`s ever growing population. Jolene Bloise. Ledbury
I support the application by Sainsburys to build a new Supermarket in Ledbury for the following reasons.
We have heard a lot from various people how ANY new out of town development will kill the high street, things that those of us who have lived here for most of our lifes have heard all to often in the past and yet our high street is still here and still trading. Don't be lured by the scare tactics praying on peoples fears, Ledbury has flourished since the first house was built, through wars, through new housing developments and yes through new stores being opening, in the future it will continue to be the Jewel in Herefordshires Crown. Colin Marschall.
I grew up in Ledbury, my Parents & Grandparents & great Grandparents & so on did also and most of my family & Friends still live here today.
Ledbury is crying out for a bigger and better shopping experience with more affordable choice for the residents who are struggling to make ends meet on limited budgets in these trying economic times. There really needs to be more local shopping choice for the residents of Ledbury and it's surrounding villages that are currently visiting places such as Malvern, Worcester, Hereford, Ross and Gloucester to do their main food shopping. By offering better product choice in Ledbury, it would save hard up Ledbury residents travelling to neighbouring towns if they didn't want to. The size of the proposed new store has obviously been carefully considered by Sainsbury's to give all local residents the opportunity to stay in Ledbury for their main food shopping, saving travel time and fuel costs, inconvenience, as well as reducing the towns carbon emissions. Ledbury really would benefit from the new Employment opportunities this store would bring too, this new Sainsbury’s store in Ledbury will create up to 220 full and part-time job opportunities.
In the near Future Ledbury has had plans approved for 800 new homes to be built in the Hereford Road end of town, with talk of more new homes on the cards in the future, so this much needed new Supermarket will help to cater to an ever increasing population of Ledbury and its surrounding area (7% growth as per Herefordshires County Council 2009 figures)

SAINSBURY’S SUBMITS APPLICATION IN LEDBURY
Following a recent public consultation, Sainsbury’s has submitted a planning application for a foodstore in Ledbury, on New Mills Industrial Estate.
Sainsbury’s will be working closely with Herefordshire Council to help facilitate the registration of the application. Once it is formally validated, an announcement will be made to the public and the application will be available to view at the council offices and via the council website.
Galebreaker, who are currently based on Sainsbury’s proposed site, are also moving closer to submitting their application for new purpose built premises on Bromyard Road. The move will enable them to accelerate their business growth.
If approved, the Sainsbury’s development will bring a much needed petrol station to the area and create around 220 new full and part-time jobs for the local community. Other benefits in the plans in include, over 270 car park spaces, a recycling centre, cash machines, improved landscaping and a customer café.
Sainsbury’s has also included a number of revisions to the plans in response to feedback from its public consultation. The changes include:
- relocation of store to help screen development and help block noise from the car park
- additional landscape screening to improve privacy for nearby residents
- a new pedestrian and cycle route from New Mills Way
- Revitalisation of south end pedestrian route to site
- more links to existing bus stops
- improved access
Michael Adenmosun, Regional Development Executive for Sainsbury’s, says: “Around 650 consultation responses were received from local people, with 79% of respondents expressing full or partial support for Sainsbury’s store plans.”
“Many people who responded said that they would like to see more choice in Ledbury so that they can stay in the town for their main groceries shopping. Our proposals offer local residents an opportunity to do just that, and we look forward to our application being brought before the planning committee in due course. “
Commenting on Galebreakers own public consultation on their proposal to relocate in Ledbury, Jeremy Scudamore, Managing Director of Galebreaker, adds:
“We are thrilled that out of all the responses from the public 84% of were in full support with a further 10% supporting some of our proposal.”

Sainsbury’s and Amcor Flexibles - Creating a new packaging experience
25/11/2011 07:52:00
“At Amcor Flexibles, we love challenges and stretching ourselves to continually delight our customers,” said Graham Bonus, Sainsbury's Account Manager at Amcor Flexibles Europe & Americas. This is exactly what happened with Sainsbury’s: they challenged us to develop an innovative new packaging format for their fresh produce that would withstand the existing distribution and supply-chain processes, and at the same time enhance the consumers’ experience".
The point of difference requested by Sainsbury’s was to create a packaging experience. "They wanted to offer the look and feel of a more traditional greengrocer packaging solution allowing consumers to see, touch and smell the quality of the Sainsbury’s Fresh Produce".
Amcor Flexibles Fresh Produce team based in Amcor Flexibles Ledbury in the UK, worked very closely with Sainsbury’s selected customer base, machinery manufacturers and film suppliers in order to develop a unique combination of flexible surface printed film and net, which would run on existing film packing lines.
Outstanding results have been achieved since the launch of the new format in June which have helped drive sales and the look of the entire category in a very competitive environment.
“The attention to detail from the team at Amcor Flexibles has been a key part of the smooth introduction of the new format, and the success of the new format and design can be seen by the positive feedback we have received from our customers,” said Stuart Lendrum, Head of Packaging and Design at Sainsbury’s.
Following this commercial success, the much coveted UK Packaging Awards 2011 results were announced on 16th November. Sainsbury's and Amcor Flexibles Fresh packaging innovation 'Taste the Difference' apple pack was awarded with FIRST PRIZE in the 'Flexible Pack of the Year' category! Sainsbury's and Amcor Flexibles also received a 'highly commended' for the netting and film 'Taste the Difference' potato solution.

Work starts on new home in Hereford for disabled
7:00am Monday 28th November 2011 in News
By Paul Rogers
BUILDERS have started work on a new home in Hereford that will house young people with profound intellectual and physical disabilities.
Martha Trust has so far raised £2.6 million of the £3.5m needed to build the home on Holywell Gutter Lane, in the Hampton Park area of the city, and volunteers are busy trying to raise the rest.
A fashion show and tapas evening recently raised £7,725 while there are further plans to hold a “simple supper for Martha” at Lyde Arundel in March.
Sainsbury’s has chosen Martha Trust as its charity of the year and held a fete and a quiz night to raise funds, while monthly bag packs are held at the store.
Harveys’ Furniture store in Hereford will also donate 15 per cent of its takings from an open weekend while Lucton School and Moor Park School in Richard’s Castle have adopted Martha Trust as their charity of the year.
It is hoped that the new home will open in August.
